I love it when Lewis Hamilton is asked in an interview “What is your biggest inspiration?” And he lists his dad, Nelson Mandela, Muhammad Ali and (Michael) Jordan. Not a bad list! #theleadershipweneed Andrew Russell ...

The Leadership We Need
On this day 11 February 1990, Nelson Mandela was released from prison after serving 27 and a half years. He appeared on the balcony of the Cape Town City Hall and made his first speech as a free man. “I stand here before you not as a prophet but as a humble servant of you, the people…..I therefore place the remaining years of my life in your hands”. This is what made him such an incredible servant leader. There was no revenge, payback, ego, hunger for power. Instead there was reconciliation, forgiveness, humility and a deep-seated utterly selfless desire to take the hands of his enemies and build a new South Africa. How the world need leaders of his calibre right now. We must never stop learning from his example. Never. Andrew Russell ...

It’s always so rewarding to receive a heartfelt message from a friend who is a Primary school teacher, Bruce Mitchell. Here he is in Nelson Mandela’s cell on Robben Island. “I have so enjoyed reading your book, thanks very much for giving me a signed copy. You write beautifully and I have found myself relating to many of your thoughts in your book, perhaps because we shared a very similar childhood, with mine being at a better school of course! I have been reading out here in Hermanus and have been reading extracts to my dad. He remembers your dad well. I've also been teaching a lot of what you have written about in my G7 history classes and plan to include a few of your thoughts to my notes for the boys, with your permission of course! You can be very proud of what you have achieved with this book, and I'm sure your father would be very proud of you. Congratulations!” Andrew Russell ...

One of my talks is titled “The Power of Sport” in which I trace the impact sport has on different communities, most notably here in South Africa. And the huge role played by Nelson Mandela in sport in our country. That is why Temba Bavuma, a black South African captaining the national Proteas cricket team and scoring a century at Newlands is so hugely relevant and significant in showing how far we have come as a sporting nation in just 30 years since the days of apartheid when someone like Temba would have been excluded from representing his country. Siya Kolisi and Temba Bavuma are now role models for every young black South African rugby and cricket player. They give them hope. They make them realise that dreams can come true. Patience, hard work, commitment, self-belief. Anything is possible. Andrew Russell ...

Nelson Mandela remains as relevant as ever today. He continues to be what I call in my book “the default setting for world leadership”. Read yet another article, this time by Joseph Contreras, for an example of how a current world leader could potentially take a leaf out of Mandela’s book. washingtonmonthly.com/2024/07/06/what-joe-biden-could-learn-from-nelson-mandela-about-knowing-whe... #theleadershipweneed #leadership #mandela ...
